Why should 2D artists and animators learn Blender?

As the animation industry continues to evolve and adapt to a multitude of new technologies, 2D artists and animators can greatly benefit from spending a bit of time to learn the incredibly powerful 3D powerhouse that is Blender. Blender is an incredibly versatile 3D animation software and it offers a variety of opportunities to expand your artistic capabilities by allowing you to explore dynamic three-dimensional space — it shouldn’t be exclusive for 3D-centric artists alone. Blender can also help 2D artists by allowing you to create immersive and captivating environments (even as mock-ups to create illustrations from), and enhance character design by envisioning your ideas with true depth and perspective.

By becoming a little more proficient in Blender, you’ll be able to seamlessly incorporate intricate 3D elements into your work, effectively bridging the gap between 2D (whether traditional or digital) and 3D forms of artwork and animation. This versatility not only increases your marketability within the ever-changing industry but also enriches your storytelling abilities, enabling you to produce more visually engaging, innovative, and captivating artwork. In a highly competitive job market, understanding both 2D and 3D principles can open up exciting new avenues for creativity and meaningful collaboration with fellow artists, ultimately fostering a richer artistic community.

Entering now is our second Club to partner with our already thriving Drawing Club, Blender Club! Blender club begins tonight, Tuesday August 5th 2025 at 6pm EST! Like our Drawing Club, it will continue every week in an ongoing basis, dependent only on enrollment / interest. Here are some of our social slides to run you through the lessons for the first 4 weeks:

We have grand plans among the instructors of what topics to branch into further, but there is method to our madness of how we’ll begin the Blender Club, so stay tuned, follow us on Instagram or Facebook, and you’ll see some snippets of what our students will be learning.

Just a little about Blender

Blender is a free, open-source, and very versatile software for artists and animators, offering a plethora of tools to learn 3D animation skills in a broad sense; from modelling, to texturing and surfacing, to lighting, to rendering, to 2D to 3D animation workflows, and so much more. Its accessibility, supportive community, and step-by-step learning approach make it ideal for beginners and experts alike.

Despite the clear benefits of 3D software like Blender, some 2D artists may feel hesitant to incorporate it into their workflow. Common concerns include the perceived steep learning curve, fear of the technical aspects, and misconceptions that 3D tools might compromise their traditional artistic style. Some artists worry that investing time in learning 3D could detract from honing their core 2D skills.

However, these concerns often stem from misconceptions. The reality is that 3D software can serve as a powerful complementary tool rather than a replacement for 2D skills. Modern 3D software like Blender have become increasingly user-friendly, offering intuitive interfaces and specific tools designed to support 2D workflows. By starting with basic features that directly benefit their current work - such as perspective guides, lighting references, or simple blocking - 2D artists can gradually build confidence while immediately seeing practical applications in their art.

The user-interface is often what many people find the most intimidating so we’ve made the first two videos to help make it easier to get started below.

We also hope to make many more helpful videos to continue making the complex 3D software even more digestible to new users. By enrolling in our Blender Club, you’ll be helping to bring us a little closer to this goal! Remember that you can enroll ANYTIME as it is an ongoing weekly Club. While enrolled, you’ll have access to the backlog of recorded Blender Club sessions.

Enroll below of contact us at the bottom of this page to arrange a 3-month pay cycle of $120 / month.
