In-Person Animation Summer Camp
NOTE: This camp will be limited to 15 participants due to the limitation of physical accommodations, so please inquire soon as we expect to be fully booked well before the summer.
Join Garth the Animation Tutor in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia for an unforgettable formative experience that will prepare you for your continued study in the exciting field of animation. This week-long camp will prime you for the years to come as you build your portfolio for College.
Garth previously taught an animation camp in Guelph, Ontario, and has now updated it with all that he’s learned from his 10 years of teaching the camp. This camp will provide an overview of the various artistic skills and processes that are incredibly valuable to a career in animation, illustration, or gaming.
The camp will encourage out-of-the-box, creative thinking, as we’ll be using a folk tale to inspire our contemporary ideas towards the artwork we’ll make for a mock-film production to demonstrate the necessary skills needed for animation.
This camp will be available in two parts, depending on the interest and summer availability of our students.

Part 1
We will begin the camp with a mixture of fundamental drawing and painting training. Topics we’ll be focusing on have been specifically chosen to give a well-rounded approach to building early artistic skills: hand drawing, life drawing from a model, and plein-air painting. Students enrolled in this part of the camp will be well-suited to tackling the challenges of Part2.
Part 2
In Part 2 we will narrow the focus into topics more directly applicable to animation, namely, storytelling, visual development, character design, environment design, and 2D frame-by-frame animation for those with mobile animation methods (see details later). During this week we’ll be using the archetype of an existing story as a template to fill with our own creativity, inspiration, and ideas. We will then rigorously be working towards the creation on some early concept artwork for a film project, as if we were going to pack it up and send it off to a studio for funding (we can dream, can’t we?!).
Part 3
Part 3 will be entirely online after the camp is complete, but we will be actively creating the animation for a scene of the film project inside an incredibly powerful 2D animation software called Moho using creative character rigging and animation. This final portion of the camp will also be formatted differently — we will meet up once a week for 3 additional weeks to allow for more time to learn the software and finesse the final scene.
